A 20-year-old Lake Charles man was shot outside of a local bar on Saturday morning and died from his injuries.

The Lake Charles Police Department was patrolling the 800 block of McNeese Street at 2:51 a.m. Saturday and noticed a large crowd in the parking lot of On The Rocks Bar on McNeese Street, according to a Tuesday news release.

The department received a call reporting the crowd, and officers stopped to clear the parking lot. 

Shots were fired as the officers were in the process of clearing the lot.

Police found Lake Charles 20-year-old Johnjose Connor Welsh lying in the parking lot. Both officers and medical personnel performed life-saving measures.

Welsh was taken to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
