Atlantic systems

Tropical Storm Dexter is continuing to head east-northeast to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean as it strengthens Wednesday morning, however forecasters say Dexter has a day or two left as a tropical system.

In the meantime, two Atlantic disturbances still have a decent chance of formation within the next week, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said as of Wednesday morning.

None of them present an immediate threat to Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Dexter

Dexter was about 405 miles south southeast of Halifax in Canada and had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, as of 4 a.m. central time. The tropical storm was traveling east northeast at 13 miles per hour.

The tropical storm is experiencing strong vertical wind shear that is expected to intensify within the next 24 to 48 hours, and contribute to the storm becoming post-tropical, NHC forecaster Lisa Bucci wrote.

However, forecasters expect Dexter to interact with a trough to the north in the next day or two, likely accelerating Dexter to the east-northeast as it becomes post-tropical.

Tropical wave

A tropical wave continues to produce a broad area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms in the eastern tropical Atlantic as of 7 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters said.

Environmental conditions are still likely to be conducive for the tropical wave's gradual development with a tropical depression possibly forming late this week or over the weekend as the system moves west northwest, forecasters said.

Forecasters give the system a 60% chance of formation within the next week and a 20% chance within the next 48 hours.

Area of low pressure

A weak area of low pressure has formed several hundred miles off the coast of the southeastern U.S. and is producing limited showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters said the system is expected to drift westward then turns northeast by the weekend.

The system is expected to be slow to develop in the next couple of days, but environmental conditions could become more conducive after that, forecasters said.

A tropical depression could form by this weekend and forecasters give the system a 40% chance of forming within the next week.
